China’s Solar Giants Launch First Patent Pool to Strengthen Industry Coordination
中国太陽電池大手3社、初の特許プールを設立—産業連携と国際展開の布石
In April 2026, three major Chinese solar companies—Trina Solar, JA Solar, and JinkoSolar—established a patent pool covering TOPCon solar cell and module technologies. The pool includes 54 Chinese patents and applications, some of which were acquired from LG. The initiative was guided by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). In recent years, the Chinese government has encouraged companies to form patent pools, including both standard-essential and non-essential patents, to promote collective licensing and monetization. This initiative aligns with that policy direction. The patent pool is expected to reduce negotiation costs and litigation risks while improving licensing efficiency. However, some experts suggest that the primary goal may not be revenue generation, but rather fostering industrial coordination and supporting Chinese companies’ global expansion. Currently limited to domestic participants, the response from international players such as Canadian Solar and Maxeon will be closely watched.
